The Pitfalls To Avoid With Affiliate Marketing Online

Why does affiliate marketing fail for some people?

There are a lot of reasons why people fail at affiliate marketing online. Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting other people’s products or services on the internet. You find a product you like, promote it to a target audience, and earn a piece of the profit for each sale that you make.

It’s regarded as the easiest and quickest way to make money online but some people are just not cut out for marketing on the internet. There are possible negatives that you need to be aware of.

Once you know exactly how to avoid the pitfalls of affiliate marketing online, this type of business can really set you up as a profitable internet entrepreneur.

5 Reasons Why People Fail With Affiliate Marketing Online

1. They Expect Instant Success

Affiliate marketing online can produce profits rather quickly. However, a life-changing income that offers time and financial freedom will not happen overnight.  It takes time to build an audience and a customer base. Don’t expect overnight success to be the case when you start promoting affiliate marketing programs. Especially if you’re working on your internet business part-time, it could take several months, or even a couple of years, before you see significant growth and income. If you accept that making money with affiliate marketing is a legitimate business model you’ll realize that you have to put appropriate business strategies in place to succeed and these take time to implement.

2. They Don’t “Niche Down” Far Enough

Are you thinking about entering the billion dollar weight loss industry? If so, your road to becoming a ‘super affiliate’ will be quicker and easier if you dig down to a much finer focus than weight loss. There are some companies that cater to the larger weight loss marketplace that spend literally millions of dollars a year on website advertising. It’s very difficult to compete with these companies.

However, when you dig down deeper in that larger niche, you begin to find less competition. You also will find that sales are easier, as tiny, micro-niche markets are incredibly passionate about finding solutions to their problems. Do you think it would be easier to sell a “weight loss for everyone” product, or a “weight loss for women over 50 that want to get their bikini body back” product?

It’s much easier to develop an authoritative presence in a smaller niche market and to be seen as the ‘go to’ person by your target audience. There is less competition than the massive markets. The most successful affiliate programs are those which enable you to directly target a specific niche which a product or service that is designed for them.

3. People Give Up Too Soon

Regardless of what niche you choose, affiliate marketing online is a competitive business. New people are entering the affiliate marketing landscape every day. They hear about the riches which are promised, and they see others making tons of money with this business model.

Unfortunately, many of these people give up right when they are on the verge of developing a real presence as a respected affiliate marketer. You can generate a profit from affiliate marketing but you need to look at the long-term picture. Give this internet business model at least a 1 or 2 year commitment. If at that time you have not made any significant money, you can move on knowing that you made a worthwhile effort.

4. They Promote Anything and Everything

Don’t be that person. Don’t just promote all affiliate programs that pay top commissions. First off, you should definitely be sticking to one topic or market. Once you decide on a niche to pursue, do your homework. You don’t have to be an expert in that niche, that’s the product creator’s job. You just need to know a little bit more than your audience. Your primary job is to find the customers and there’s always someone out there who knows less than you do. Focus on your audience. They want someone to help them solve their problems.

Limit yourself to a handful of extremely high-value products that have drawn rave reviews by customers. There’s a big difference between someone who will promote any old product to earn a quick buck and someone who values their reputation enough to make sure they carefully recommend only the best products for their audience. Promoting anything and everything, with a new offer going out to your email list or website visitors every day, is a quick way to get ignored by your audience.

5. They Don’t Add Value

There are literally thousands of affiliate marketers promoting the same products and services you are. How can you get someone to buy through your affiliate links rather than another one, especially when the price and the product are exactly the same?

Add value.

Create an incredible bonus that someone would be happy to pay for. If you are promoting a popular fitness video, add a video series or an ebook as a free bonus that is related to the product you are promoting. In this way you add value to the purchase, something that 99% of all affiliate marketers never attempt to do.

I think one thing that makes people fail in affiliate marketing is the lack of motivation and interest. All they think about is that they can make money online. But every successful affiliate marketer worked hard to earn what they’ve got right now. They have to learn how everything works first before they can be successful.

Totally agree Dave. Affiliate marketing is not a get rich quick scheme. However, it’s still a great way to start your own online business.
