5 ‘Must Haves’ When You Build a Home Based Business Website

home based business website

Building a home based business website may be a complete ‘no go’ for some people. They might think  that they do not have the technological abilities or any understanding of how a home internet business essentially works. But there are no regulations and restrictions as to who can or cannot set up a home based business website.

The internet has opened up a whole new world of opportunity for entrepreneurs of all ages to start creating a web based business. It ust takes a bit of learning and to get everything in the right place at the right time so that your online  business is a success.

As a starter, here are five ‘must have’ features when you build a home based business website:

1. What are the benefits to your potential customer?

If you have home-based business website (or any website for that matter!) you must ensure that when a potential customer visits your website that they stay on your website and do not leave immediately. To stop a visitor bouncing straight off your website as soon as they get to it, the first thing they must see are the benefits of your products or services that they were looking for when they come to your website.

No matter how well you have tuned your search engine optimisation and page rankings you cannot keep a customer onto your site or make them buy.

Don’t just focus on the home page and keywords. These are important but you must clearly outline the benefits of your product or service so that the person will want to buy from you.

You must have a crystal clear benefit why a potential customer should buy from you and nobody else. And if you don’t know what it is, how do you expect your customer to know?

2. Make information easy to find

Provide all the necessary information with easy and visible links to related pages so that the customer can navigate to the appropriate place without difficulty and get the information they want. Any part of your website should never be more than ‘3 clicks away’. Complicated navigation and long pages of text without headings or pictures are a big turn off for website visitors.

3. Get the contact details of your potential customer

It is very unlikely that a potential customer will buy from your web-based home businesses the first time they visit your website. You must get them to provide their email address (and ideally their name), via a data capture form, so that you can then send emails to the potential customer to build a relationship in the expectation that they eventually will want to buy from you. To get the person to submit their email address you must provide something of value – like a free report, video, DVD etc.

4. Who is the target customer for your home based business website?

When you set up your home based business website, you must have a clear idea who your target customers are. If you do not really know who your customers are and what they want to buy, it is unlikely that will make much money.

Your website is your virtual storefront and must appeal to a particular audience. For example, a general hardware store has a different appeal to a toy store.

When a customer is considering your product or service, the customer must clearly understand “what’s in it for me?” – in other words, what problem is are the products or services on your home based business website solving for the customer? For example, will it help him to loose weight, have more spare time, earn more money, drive safely, get a better job etc? It is the benefit of a product that sells it – not the features.

5. Website Contact Information

Your home based business website will allow customers to buy your products from wherever they are in the world on any day and at anytime– that is the beauty of web-based business ideas.

You should always provide contact information on your website, so that customers can contact you. At the very least, this should be your email address. People may have a question you about sales, general information or technical problems on your site. How many sales could you loose if a customer just has a simple question but has no way of contacting you? And remember, if you ask customers to contact you via email, to regularly check you inbox!
