Is Your Business Ready For Online Business?

Another UK High Street Brand Feels The Online Business Pinch

At the beginning of 2013, the UK saw a number of well known high-street retailers fall into online businessadministration.  The biggest fall was HMV, the famous music outlet. And now, as we approach the end of 2013 the latest brand that will disappear from the UK high streets is the video rental shop Blockbuster. All of its 264 UK stores will close before the end of the year.

In the UK, more shops are closing than opening with clothes stores, video and photography retailers suffering the hardest. But why is this happening?

The Digital Revolution

Blockbuster has admitted that it has been hit hard by digital alternatives such as iTunes and Netflix. This shows that if traditional retailers and stores do not adapt and implement a business strategy to cater for the changing behaviour of their digitally-enabled customers, they will have a very hard time staying in business.

The internet has dramatically changed how the world functions and communicates:

  • Vinyl records gave way to CDs, then MP3s, and now streaming audio
  • The VHS tape gave way to the DVD and Blu-ray, and now, streaming video
  • Dial up internet gave way to high speed fibre optic
  • Mail evolved to the facsimile, then email
  • Film photography transitioned to digital photography

Online Business Opportunities

The ongoing growth of the internet is phenomenal. In 1990, it was estimated that were 2.8 million internet users, which equated to 0.05% of the world population at that time. Today,  there an estimated 2.8 billion internet users, which is almost 40% of the world population. This number is increasing by the day.

The good news in all of this is that there is now a whole new world of possibility in the increasingly virtual world. The surge of business being transferred from traditional bricks and mortar stores to the internet has created an incredible opportunity for entrepreneurs who want to embrace digital technology.
