It might seem like an obvious statement but sometimes businesses forget the fact that the only way to make money is to get customers to buy. A sales funnel process is set of steps where you move a prospect through a series of communications that results in them buying from you.


But what happens after that first sale is made? Are you now finished with that customer and do move onto the next prospect?

This is leaving money on the table, and is not servicing your buyers correctly.

The AIDA sales formula (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) is a basic, but powerful top to bottom sales funnel template.

  • Attention: Attract the attention of your prospects.
  • Interest: Once you have their attention, get them interested.
  • Desire: Turn interest into desire to make them want your product or service.
  • Action:  If you’ve done a good job in the first 3 steps of this process, your prospect takes action, and buys your product or service. You then move them onto another level for the sales funnel process to start again.

If you’ve ever been fishing, you have been employing a classic sales funnel process to getting fish into your boat, maybe without even knowing it. You want to attract the attention of fish, get them interested in your bait, hopefully entice them with your lure and fishing tactics in such a way that you build their desire to eat. In the perfect world scenario, this desire leads to the action you are hoping for, the fish bites your hook, and you have just landed dinner.

The process works the same for landing prospects who will hopefully become repeat customers through your sales funnel model.

How Does Your Sales Funnel Work?

At every level of a sales funnel an offer is made. At the top of the funnel, you’re offering something for free in return for getting a prospect’s contact information. Then you begin marketing, following up with emails to attempt to make a sale.

Throughout your sales funnel process, you should have multiple offers that complement each other. For example, when you buy a car, the salesman doesn’t simply hand you the keys and then disappear. You’re offered extended warranties, upgrades like upholstery and wheel options. Every few months the salesperson will contact you, ask you if you’re happy with your purchase, and let you know about a discount or sale going on.

You’ll be approached with opportunities to trade in your vehicle in the future, and the sales process goes on and on. For a lot of reasons, it makes sense to market to someone who has already purchased one of your products, rather than try to convince new people to buy your services. After all, it costs 6 to 7 times more to get a new customer than keep an existing one.

How Many Levels In The Sales Funnel Process? 

A single level sales funnel process means after a purchase is made, you’re finished with that customer and you move onto the next prospect. But this a fatal error.

Your current customers will be happy for you to remain in contact as long as you continue to provide real value. Remember it’s easier to convince a previous purchaser to spend money with you than it is a new prospect at the top of your sales funnel.

There is no “secret number” of sales funnel levels. Each business, product and service is different. Just make sure you are constantly offering your prospects and customers opportunities to enhance their lives with future purchases.
