On the downside, webinar content can become stale quickly. Podcasts and other “fresh” marketing methods keep you constantly in front of your prospects, clients and customers with new and relevant information.

Live webinars resemble an online television show. You engage your audience “right now”. That’s a good thing. They can ask you questions in real time. Since you are talking to them live, they can relate to you more as a “real person” than when they listen to a recorded, scripted podcast episode.

Webinars continually show extremely high response rates. This is because the user is engaged and interacting with the host. At the end of the webinar, if a paid product or offer is presented, sales rates are much higher than using other online marketing methods. Webinars are great for selling high income products. This is something that is tough to do with a recorded podcast episode.

How many people listen to podcasts these days? The Pew Research Center says that roughly 1 in 4 US residents above the age of 12 listen to at least one podcast every 30 days. That’s more than double the number of podcast listeners since 2009. That means access to more than 80 million Americans with your podcast episode, as well as a larger global audience.

On the downside, you have to publish regularly.  When producing a podcast, it is best to create new episodes with fresh content, at least weekly, to build and maintain an audience. Engagement is also limited with a podcast. Sure, you can link to a survey or Q&A piece of content, but the “right now”, live interaction of a webinar is simply not there.

On the upside, podcast episodes are almost always free.  Often after webinars are given they are often sold as information products. Also, webinars are generally given to offer some kind of paid product or service. These are usually high-value offers, but you have to pay to go past the free content which is delivered. People love that they can listen to millions of podcast episodes if they like, never pay a penny, and you become an expert in your field from the information you provide in the process.

Podcasts and webinars are excellent ways to build your business. They both make you look like an industry leader. You can use them to build email lists and sell products, and they are free or close-to-free marketing and business building tools.

Depending on what you are trying to do and how comfortable you are using these two different types of media, one or the other may be your marketing weapon of choice. The smart marketer will use both webinars and podcasts to build his or her business, and create real value for their target audience.

If a webinar is broadcast live and podcast is broadcast as a recording, a webcast is a simply a recorded webinar. A webcast gives you a way to offer free, valuable content to a targeted audience forever. You can provide real value to your prospects simply by giving them a link to your webcast.

If your offer is good, you deliver a lot of great free value and you targeted your audience correctly, you have created a tool that can find prospects, qualify them, present your offer and captures sales on autopilot.

You absolutely must be building a list of qualified prospects if you have any sort of business presence online and a webcast will help you to build your email list. To access your webcast, your prospect has to give you their email address so that you can send them a link to the webcast recording.

As long as you add some really incredible value and information that appeals to your target audience, a recorded webcast becomes a product you can sell over and over.  Host and record a webinar once, and you can use it for marketing, sales, building an email list, and for any other number of business benefits. Unlike a podcast episode, you don’t have to continually host webinar episodes regularly.

The Not So Good Things About A Webcast

Sometimes webcasts can feel like a sales pitch from the get-go. Since you are pre-recording a webinar and using it over and over to build your email list or make sales, you may unconsciously broadcast that intent.

When your audience knows that your webcast has been recorded they don’t feel like they have to listen right now. They’ll often times put off listening until a later date, and never end up benefiting from your content. You should never mislead your prospects by marketing a recorded webinar as live.

Leading on from this, you have to ensure that your webcast content doesn’t become stale. The internet is a rapidly changing business model. Because of this, the information you give in a webcast may not be relevant months or even weeks after you recorded it.
